Quick Tip: Food and Drinking Water in Developing Countries
Tap water in developing countries often is not safe for travelers to drink; we recommend that you stick to bottled water during your visit. In fact, it’s best to stick to beverages from bottles: water, soda, or beer. And since it’s not worth the risk to have ice in your drink, remember to leave it out. Also take care not to ingest water when showering or brushing your teeth.
Milk in developing countries often is not pasteurized, so avoid dairy products unless you can be assured of pasteurization. Also, only eat cooked vegetables (avoid salads) and peeled fruit. Remember the adage: “Boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it.”
