As the Midnight Sun turns night into day, Scandinavia shines. It’s the perfect time to visit, with the majestic countryside at its loveliest, and the cities at their liveliest. From the cosmopolitan capitals of Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo to Norway’s magnificent fjord country, our small group encounters Scandinavia at its best, both on and off the beaten path.
Itinerary
Day 1: Depart U.S. for Copenhagen, Denmark
Day 2: Arrive Copenhagen After arriving in the Danish capital today, we transfer to our hotel before tonight’s welcome dinner at festive Tivoli Gardens. D
Day 3: Copenhagen A morning tour introduces us to this most livable of cosmopolitan cities. We visit Rosenborg Palace, housing the dazzling crown jewels; see the popular Little Mermaid statue; and stroll the narrow, historic streets of downtown to City Hall Square. This afternoon is free to explore independently; with an abundance of museums, restaurants, and a lively arts scene, Copenhagen offers diversions aplenty. B
Day 4: Copenhagen/Oslo, Norway After a morning at leisure, this afternoon we visit Christianborg Palace, seat of the Danish Parliament; and the Danish Stock Exchange nearby. Then we board the overnight ferry to Oslo, settling in our private outside cabins and enjoying dinner on board. B,D
Day 5: Oslo/Lofthus We disembark this morning in Oslo then travel by coach to Lofthus on Hardanger Fjord in Norway’s western fjord district of stunning natural scenery: snow-capped mountains, pristine fjords, and abundant orchards. Here we visit the mighty and popular Voeringfoss Waterfall and Hardanger Nature Center before dinner at our hotel. B,D
Day 6: Lofthus A morning at leisure to savor the beauty of Hardanger Fjord. After lunch on our own we visit a floating salmon farm then a local orchard, where we meet the family who runs it over cake and coffee. Late afternoon we return to our hotel, where we dine tonight. B,D
Day 7: Lofthus/Flam/Bergen It’s a day of extreme beauty (“Norway in a nutshell”) and diverse transportation as we travel by ferry and coach to Gudvangen, where we embark another ferry for the voyage to Flam. Along the way we experience the grandeur of Naeroyfjord, a fjord arm of stunning Sognefjord and a UNESCO World Heritage site; and the Aurland fjords in the Flam Valley. After a box lunch in Flam we board the Flam Railway for a thrilling hour-long excursion through 2,000-foot deep Flam Valley. The train hurtles through 20 tunnels that spiral in and out of mountains, past the mighty Kjosfossen Waterfall, and across the Flam River three different times. In Myrdal we change trains and continue to Voss then travel by coach to Bergen and our hotel. After we check in, we'll relax over dinner at a local restaurant tonight. B,L,D
Day 8: Bergen We see the highlights of this beautiful city (Norway’s second largest) on a morning tour, including Trolhaugen, country home of composer Edvard Grieg; the lively fish market; the colorful 14th-century Hanseatic merchants’ quarter of Bryggen (a UNESCO World Heritage site); and 16th-century Bergenhus fortress. The afternoon is free to explore independently. B
Day 9: Bergen/Geiranger Today we see some of Norway’s finest scenery at Geirangerfjord, another UNESCO site. The country’s most dramatic fjord, Geiranger is 10 miles long and 960 feet deep. An hour-long cruise showcases this magnificent waterway up close. After we reach our hotel in Geiranger early afternoon, the remainder of the day is at leisure to enjoy this popular village as we wish. B,D
Day 10: Geiranger This morning’s excursion on the Eagle’s Road promises abundant thrills as we ride along 11 hairpin turns through mountain passes. We visit a local farm for lunch then return to Geiranger for a relaxing afternoon. Before dinner at our hotel tonight, we enjoy a reception there to view a private vintage car collection. B,L,D
Day 11: Geiranger/Gala We enjoy another thrilling drive today as we ascend to the summit of Mount Dalsnibba (alt. 4,500 feet) for stunning views of Geirangerfjord and the mountains, lakes, and waterfalls beyond. From here we travel to Lillehammer, famed ski resort that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics. After reaching our hotel in the village of Gala, the rest of the afternoon is at leisure amidst the beautiful scenery. We enjoy dinner tonight at our hotel. B,D
Day 12: Gala/Lillehammer/Oslo This morning we visit the Olympic park and ski jump in Lillehammer then continue on by coach to Oslo. We’re free to enjoy the pastoral Norwegian capital as we wish this afternoon and evening. B
Day 13: Oslo A morning city tour includes the Norwegian Folk Museum and Frognerpark, with its intriguing bronze sculptures of human figures by artist Gustav Vigeland. We also visit the Viking Ship Museum, housing the well-preserved remains of wooden ships that crossed the ocean in search of new lands more than a thousand years ago. The afternoon is free to explore Oslo on our own; parks, galleries, and museums abound. We dine tonight at our hotel. B,D
Day 14: Oslo/Tallberg, Sweden We depart this morning for lakeside Tallberg in the Dalarna district, scenic center of Sweden’s folk traditions. Here we visit a workshop where craftsmen carve the famed Dala wooden horses before continuing on to our hotel. B,D
Day 15: Tallberg/Uppsala/Stockholm Our tour of this storied region continues this morning at the traditional Swedish-style home of artist Carl Larsson; 13th-century Uppsala Cathedral, coronation site of Swedish monarchs; and the picturesque town of Sigtuna. Late afternoon we reach Stockholm, the Swedish capital built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. B
Day 16: Stockholm Highlights of this morning’s city tour include a visit to the Vasa Museum displaying the warship Wasa, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was raised virtually intact in 1961; and historic Gamla Stan, the medieval Old Town. Our afternoon is at leisure to explore independently. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner. B,D
Day 17: Depart for U.S. We transfer to the airport this morning for our return flight to the U.S. B
